Lake County a possible Unigov?

John Byrne from the Post Tribune asks today: Was HEA 1001 a stop toward Unigov in Lake County?

"Why did the General Assembly order us to do this, if the recommendations we give don't have any teeth anyway?" Councilman Ted Builski asked.

Szarmach pointed out Marion County's consolidated city-county council operates this way, crafting budgets for all the taxing bodies in Indianapolis and environs.

The General Assembly might be pushing Indiana's counties toward unified government like that in Indianapolis, Szarmach said.

Although I don't believe this was the goal of HEA 1001 or either party, there is the definite possibility that some municipal groups in Lake County will look to efficiencies and even mergers of operations as a way to cut costs and fit under the circuit breakers.
