The Maverick Strikes Again - Breaking News

Senator John McCain once again struck a chord with regular Americans today when he proclaimed that he would shut down his active campaign, return to Washington, and postpone the Friday debates.

Oh my, Senator Obama was surprised! Of course he was, he's a typical Chicago politician and he's not used to being caught off guard. Obama of course wants to continue the debate and disregard the economic crisis.

From Gateway: McCain shows leadership and puts COUNTRY FIRST...
Senator John McCain announced today that he wants to delay Friday's debate because of the economic crisis and return to Washington to focus on the nation's financial problems.

Some people lead and some people follow.

Update the video of his announcement:

Why in the world would you NOT want to hear from them on Friday night? One of them will be dealing with this issue in a few months. This is not the time for them to bail on an opportunity to talk to the American people. The debate on Friday will get the highest number of viewers ever, hope he shows up.

This feels alot like the dismay by reporters over Sarah Palin "only" doing two full interviews with reporters recently. Since when does a politician agree to make the reporters happy when running for office?

I'd like to see Senator McCain in Washington, where it appears some very important decisions are going to be made. He's going to have to run this country for the next four years, and the result of this week will become his new problem.

That's more important than a staged debate event, where only 10% of the public is undecided (or too lazy to decide) and none will change their minds on Friday nite.

I'm not fooled by this act political theater either. I hope Obama holds his ground and insists on the having the debate Friday. I'll be watching.

Hey Jonathon, thanks for coming over to the politics site.

Strategy is political stagecraft, I agree. But I also want the best leaders in Washington when they pass this bit of legislation ... which I think they will ... since the porkers are already bellying up to get as much cash for themselves as possible.

As for the debate, they don't accomplish much anyway. If I recall Obama wasn't too interested in doing town halls when offered over the summer. Now all of a sudden he feels a desperate need to speak to the public? Right

They're both posturing, and that's what makes our political system the most fun in the world. At the end of the day, no matter who wins, the keys will be turned over to the winner peacefully

Here is my prediction. McCain returns to Washington to save the day and then makes it just in time to hold the debate. Why you ask because that is what a good leader does!!!

I hear McCain is also considering suspending the election. Why go forward with the election in such a time of crisis??? Let's just let him declare himself the winner... ;)

Interesting that he hasn't had time to show up for a vote in the Senate since February. But now, when the man who's "always for deregulation" is facing a debate during the week when Americans have seen what deregulation has done to the economy, he suddenly feels the need to get some work done in the Senate...

Besides, McCain isn't in a leadership position with the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee (in fact, he's not even *on* the committee!). The committee leadership is Chris Dodd and Richard Shelby, who both seem to be doing fine working in a bipartisan fashion on this issue without McCain's help at this point.

I think the American people will see McCain's move for what it is: Political posturing.

I think many people agree it is politic posturing, including the press which he is not getting much of today. CNN is completely ignoring him and running clips of Obama.

And Palins answer to Katie Couric when asked for specific instances where he had pushed for stricter oversight (that may have prevented this mess) during his 26 year career:

“I’ll try to find you some and I’ll bring them to you.”

This may explain why the McCain camp is proposing postponing VP debate

He lied to Dave too! If you missed it, watch Letterman from last night:

Oh, and 'witchcraft' protection got Palin the governors’ job:
