More from Indy reporter:
The City of Gary has made a compelling case for an extension to four years to make the cuts required under statute. Presenters from the airport and other related entities still to come.
Remonstrators look to be lined up though in full force, with what appears to be a large contingent from Miller. One councilman even suggested prior to remonstrations that he believes some Miller residents may prefer to de-annex from the City.
When asked by a commissioner "would you have made any of these cuts without HEA 1001?" The city representative answered "eventually yes, our debt was growing and we couldn't keep going"
The commissioners are being very frank, with comments about the need for every local community to cut deeply.
Trivia - did you know that the councilmen have their own staff separate from the city staff?
The Mayor and his staff made strong arguments, but it remains to be seen if the distressed unit board will agree to the extensions sought, and even if so, will substantial cuts be litigated by unions. Is the budget even high enough to cover the new litigation almost guaranteed?
