For those that may have missed the announcement last night, Valparaiso Mayor Jon Costas did formally announce his intentions of running for Mayor this year. This will mark his third term as Mayor if he is successful.
Potential opponents? Not sure there are any so far. Some rumors about a former councilman on the Republican side and a couple local Democrat attorneys. But frankly they were all hoping he wouldn't run and they could face someone who didn't have a 70% approval rating. Ah yes, I am well aware that some were hoping the ill-fated Ronald Reagan Parkway problem would be the Mayor's undoing. Not so.
So with a balanced budget, approaching $4 million in rainy day funds, cash investments in more downtown and eastgate improvements, Valparaiso Street storm water project, more sidewalks, the same number of City employees as 10 years ago, and a whole lot more good news ... what exactly does one choose to run against him? The fact that he "might" be asked to run for statewide office someday? That's a bad thing? I don't think so.
